Travel:Cycling down Mount Teide in Tenerife

We recently went to Tenerife on holiday and although we spent most of our time sunbathing, swimming and eating nice food we wanted to do something a bit adventurous. We saw a sign for Downhill Bike Tours in our hotels and went to enquire about it. You basically get taken up Mount Teide – the largest volcano in Tenerife(12,198 ft) – and you cycle down it. To cycle up the hill, you have to be a very good cyclist as it’s quite steep so we thought cycling down would be a nice way to see the beautiful scenery without being stuck on a coach. We went with Mr Bike so if you’re in Tenerife and fancy giving this a try, I would definitely recommend them.

We were picked up from our hotel by a minibus and made our way up the mountain, picking up  few people on the way. About 3/4 of the way up we stopped of at a lovely Spanish cafe. It had some beautiful views and I loved how Spanish and cultural it was.

We then stopped of at the national park to take in the beautiful views and get our bikes ready. There were about 12 people in total and we all cycled in a straight line down the mountain. The road had been freshly tarmacked therefore it was a lovely smooth ride almost the whole way down. We also learnt some things about the volcano which I found interesting and stopped of at various points in the ride to take pictures and take in our picturesque surroundings. We spent most of the ride going through a pine forest and the smell was AMAZING!

We stopped of around halfway for a Canarian picnic which was a great way to experience the local cuisine. We had canary potatoes, bread, Canarian cheese, dates, chorizo, olives and spiced biscuits. It was delicious! I wish I’d taken a photo of it now but I was too interested in trying the amazing food!

We went all the way down to sea level and enjoyed a drink whilst talking about our amazing experience. It was such a lovely day and the perfect way to experience the island. I would 100% recommend this, the instructors were all very friendly and helpful. You can look at their website here: http://www.mrbiketenerife.com/
